Galactic Velocity Context of 3I/ATLAS and Thick-Disk Origin Hypotheses

 



The galactic velocity of an interstellar object provides crucial clues about its stellar origin and dynamical history.
For 3I/ATLAS (C/2025 N1), velocity-space analysis places meaningful constraints on its likely birthplace within the Milky Way.

The inbound velocity vector of 3I/ATLAS, expressed in the Galactic reference frame and corrected to the Local Standard of Rest, deviates significantly from the kinematic signatures of the thin-disk stellar population. Its velocity components fall outside the narrow dispersion expected for dynamically cold disk stars, indicating a dynamically heated origin. Such kinematics are more consistent with thick-disk or dynamically evolved stellar populations, where higher velocity dispersions arise from early Galactic evolution and gravitational scattering.

Statistical comparison with synthetic Galactic models supports this interpretation. The velocity offset of 3I/ATLAS from thin-disk norms exceeds typical measurement uncertainties and aligns more closely with distributions associated with older stellar environments. This suggests that the parent system of 3I/ATLAS may have formed in a dynamically active region of the Galaxy, where gravitational interactions efficiently eject planetesimals into interstellar space.

Placing 3I/ATLAS in a Galactic context extends its scientific value beyond Solar System dynamics. By linking small-body kinematics to large-scale Galactic structure, such analyses provide a rare observational bridge between planetary system formation and Galactic evolution. As additional interstellar objects are identified, velocity-space studies will enable population-level tests of where and how extrasolar planetesimals originate.
